What are longtail keywords?

Every website should be optimized with Keywords. Your meta keywords are one of the many different ways that you can optimize your website for search engines. Most common keywords are pretty much taken so to say. What I mean by taken is that a lot of sites use these keywords, so it will be harder to get traffic through those keywords. For instance a really heavy targeted keyword might be “optimization.” Now the average website really has no theoretical chance to make that keyword a big time boost its traffic. The reason for this is because there are so many website that have already used that keyword and most of the simple keywords. This is not to say that it isn’t possible, just not likely. Even though it is not likely to be able to be first in the search engine for a word like optimization, you can get a high position with longtail keywords.

Introducing The Longtail

What is a longtail keyword? Most people take keywords as really literal. Keywords doesn’t mean you have to use one word keywords. You can use phrases or weird combination’s of words to make keywords. These are called longtail keywords. Longtail keywords are great because there are so many combination’s of words that you can make and not all of these combination’s will be taken. For instance going back to the word optimization, why couldn’t you use something more specific like “search engine optimization” or “urban website search engine optimization.” Now being in the SEO industry I know that search engine optimization is a heavily trafficked keyword, so I would not try to build on it as much as maybe the “urban website search engine optimization.”

Longtail Conclusion

As a Website Search Engine Optimizer I search for hours to find the best combination’s of words to make the most trafficked keywords. This is something that has built my website’s search engine visibility greatly at shanestrong.com. Finding longtail keywords can be hard and take a long time but there are services out there that can take a little bit of the stress away. Most notable is the Google Adwords Keyword Generator. This tool basically lets you put in a combination of words or a url/domain and it will do most of the work for you. It will show you how heavy the traffic is for different combination’s of words and even let you make a txt document of ones that you would like to use. With that I will leave you to the long task of finding the longtails. Good hunting to you all.
