Must Use Meta Tags

Of the list started above there are some that are more important than others. The top 5 most suggested to be used are abstract, description, keyword, revisit, and robots. Each one of these are important in there own way.

Abstract

The Abstract tag is similar to the description meta tag in the since that it explains what the page is about. The only real difference with the Abstract tag is that it is a one sentence explanation of the description. It is written like this:

Description

The Description tag is exactly what it means. This is a short usually under 20 words excerpt of what your page is about. This also is what will be displayed in most search engines under your pages listing as a description. This tag is one of the most strongly suggested tags to be used of all. This tag is used like this:

Keyword

Keywords tag one of the best traffic tags of all. This tag is probably the most highly suggested tag of all. This tag is a group of words that lets the search engine know what the webpage is about. This tag works well with another article found here this article talks about long tail keywords and explains that a keyword doesn’t have to be one word. When using this tag you separate each keyword with a coma. You should also limit the amount of keywords to 10. This works heavily with the description tag to let search engines know what the webpage is about. This tag is written like this:

Revisit

Revisit tag is a great way to get search engines or spiders to crawl your website more often. If you have a site that is updated everyday or every week you can use this tag to tell the crawler or search engine to revisit the webpage after a certain time. So say you have a blog site and you update your website everyday and really need your site to get crawled as often as possible you can set this tag to 1 day and the crawler will know to check your site everyday for updates. This tag is used like this:

Robots

This tag is used to tell robots, bots, spiders, crawlers, or whatever else they are called weather or not to index the webpage. Some webpages are made not to be included in search engines. This tag lets you tell search engines to not pay attention to the page so to say. This tag has 4 different options noindex, index, nofollow, or follow. These can be used in a combination of ways. For instance if you want a crawler to not index the webpage but continue through it you would do noindex, follow. This way anything in the page will not be indexed but if there are links then the crawler will follow them. This tag is written like this:

Not So Important Tags

Author

This tells the author of the webpage and is written like this:

This states the websites copyright information and is written like this:

This has 3 options Global, Local, and IU – Internal Use. This is written like this:

This lets search engines know what language the webpage is in. These are the options BG (Bulgarian), CS (Czech), DA (Danish), DE (German), EL (Greek), EN (English), EN-GB (English-Great Britain), EN-US (English-United States), ES (Spanish), ES-ES (Spanish-Spain), FI (Finnish), HR (Croatian), IT (Italian), FR (French), FR-CA (French-Quebec), FR-FR (French-France), JA (Japanese), KO (Korean), NL (Dutch), NO (Norwegian), PL (Polish), PT (Portuguese), RU (Russian), SV (Swedish), and ZH (Chinese).
