Meta Tag Examples

Meta tags are one of the most valuable parts of SEO. There are many different kinds of meta tags that can be used. Most of these tags are quite significant to the amount of traffic a website will get and the placement a website will receive. Meta tags are HTML tags that provide information that describes the content of the pages a user will be viewing to search engines. Meta tags help search engine with displaying and placing your website within the search engines database. All meta tags are held in the head section of a websites code. Here is a list of meta tags you can use:

Must Use Meta Tags

Of the list started above there are some that are more important than others. The top 5 most suggested to be used are abstract, description, keyword, revisit, and robots. Each one of these are important in there own way.


The Abstract tag is similar to the description meta tag in the since that it explains what the page is about. The only real difference with the Abstract tag is that it is a one sentence explanation of the description. It is written like this:


The Description tag is exactly what it means. This is a short usually under 20 words excerpt of what your page is about. This also is what will be displayed in most search engines under your pages listing as a description. This tag is one of the most strongly suggested tags to be used of all. This tag is used like this:


Keywords tag one of the best traffic tags of all. This tag is probably the most highly suggested tag of all. This tag is a group of words that lets the search engine know what the webpage is about. This tag works well with another article found here this article talks about long tail keywords and explains that a keyword doesn’t have to be one word. When using this tag you separate each keyword with a coma. You should also limit the amount of keywords to 10. This works heavily with the description tag to let search engines know what the webpage is about. This tag is written like this:


Revisit tag is a great way to get search engines or spiders to crawl your website more often. If you have a site that is updated everyday or every week you can use this tag to tell the crawler or search engine to revisit the webpage after a certain time. So say you have a blog site and you update your website everyday and really need your site to get crawled as often as possible you can set this tag to 1 day and the crawler will know to check your site everyday for updates. This tag is used like this:


This tag is used to tell robots, bots, spiders, crawlers, or whatever else they are called weather or not to index the webpage. Some webpages are made not to be included in search engines. This tag lets you tell search engines to not pay attention to the page so to say. This tag has 4 different options noindex, index, nofollow, or follow. These can be used in a combination of ways. For instance if you want a crawler to not index the webpage but continue through it you would do noindex, follow. This way anything in the page will not be indexed but if there are links then the crawler will follow them. This tag is written like this:

Not So Important Tags

Some of the not so important tags on the list above are author, copyright, distribution, expires, and language. Each one of these tag are not necessarily considered important. But each one of these can be useful to your webpage. I am going to give each a quick over view and how to use.


This tells the author of the webpage and is written like this:

This has 3 options Global, Local, and IU – Internal Use. This is written like this:


This lets search engines know when to delete the webpage from there database. This is written like this:


This lets search engines know what language the webpage is in. These are the options BG (Bulgarian), CS (Czech), DA (Danish), DE (German), EL (Greek), EN (English), EN-GB (English-Great Britain), EN-US (English-United States), ES (Spanish), ES-ES (Spanish-Spain), FI (Finnish), HR (Croatian), IT (Italian), FR (French), FR-CA (French-Quebec), FR-FR (French-France), JA (Japanese), KO (Korean), NL (Dutch), NO (Norwegian), PL (Polish), PT (Portuguese), RU (Russian), SV (Swedish), and ZH (Chinese). The Last And Not To Be Used Tag

Refresh tag this is used to auto refresh a webpage after a certain amount of seconds. This is also frowned upon by most search engines and some will ban your entire website if tag is to be found. This tag is strongly suggested to be not used for no reason. This is how you use the tag:
